Back again with another Thirsty Thursday and today I’m talking about all things body care. Last week I covered what I love to use for my skincare routine so this week is my must-haves for my body. I love my Monat products and my Caudalie products which I have one of each I use but my obsession is Frank’s body care. It’s all-natural, made from coffee grounds, and is perfect for exfoliating that dry skin away, helping your skin look younger and healthier, and most importantly improves the look of stretch marks and reducing cellulite which as a mother with curves is fantastic. So let’s get started with the in-shower care.
Coconut Coffee Scrub by Frank body. It’s messy so be forewarned. It’s a deep exfoliant because of the coffee grounds so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone with really sensitive skin and don’t like a really rough scrub. I however love it.
Express-O coffee scrub. This is the one I use if I’m in more of a hurry but still want to exfoliate while fixing some of my problem areas. It is more gentle than the coffee scrub above but still very effective.
Glycolic Body Scrub. This is a favorite for the family when they suffer from bumps and acne breakouts on the chest and back etc. It exfoliates removing dirt, and oils and helps clear up unwanted spots.
Monat Moisturize and Replenish Body Wash for an all over clean leaving my skin smooth and smelling great.
Perky Sculpting Body Hydrator. One of my after shower go to. This moisturizer helps firm skin while hydrating and is designed for your tush. I should also mention when you’re all done using it,give a clean and it’s a to-go coffee cup.
Booty Drops firming oil. Kind of speaks for itself in the name but it gives your booty a little pick me up..
Caudalie Vinosculpt Lift and Firm Body cream. This is for the rest of my body helping with firmness, and hydration, and reducing the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and cellulite.
Lockdown entertainment. I got a wee bit tipsy, ran a bath, donned a bikini climbed in with my tequila and put scrub all over my legs, and pictured a beach setting. A good laugh was had by all and it helped cheer me up.
Shenanigans were had, the party was fun. The hangover, not so much, lol x
That’s a wrap on this weeks Thirsty Thursday. Franks body can be found at http://www.franksbody.com, Monat of coarse can be found through your local rep and Caudalie can be found in Sephora stores or online at http://www.caudalie.com. I couldn’t recommend these products enough but again find the products that meet your needs and work for you.
Our first edition of Trippin Tuesday will be about this magical bookstore I found in Calgary, Alberta. It’s not really magical to anyone other than me so that is my story and I’m sticking to it. My friend and I were on our way back from a hike in Lake Louise which will be another post because it was awesome and I had heard of the store before but had never had the chance to visit so we figured why not?
The name of this magical haven is The Next Page and is located in the Inglewood community in Calgary. Frankly, that whole stretch of 9th Ave had some really cool stores along it, definitely worth a stroll. But back to the book store when I walked in I just felt at home if that makes sense. It’s in an older style building with a rolling ladder that makes you want to glide along the shelves. ( I will have one of those in my house one day lol) , old typewriters and displays throughout the store that catch your eye.
The display window …..
My favorite part besides everything I listed above is downstairs where you’ll find the used book section, and the seed library where you can borrow and lend seeds for the garden enthusiasts. And chairs are set up theatre style where they play old movies. I sat down and lost myself in the movie, the music, and the space. I couldn’t even tell you what was playing that day I was lost in the moment and how I felt.
That Beautiful wall of books and the ladder I wanted to play on.
“Please don’t touch me”
Gorgeous display
Downstairs in the used section. They will purchase used books for cash or store credit. Intake for used books are Mon-Fri during business hours.
Where time stood still and I was lost in the moment…..
Another view of the theatre set-up. They also have Toonie Tuesday movie nights in this space. The Seed Lending Library
If you are ever in the Inglewood area of Calgary I definitely recommend making this a stop. They are amazing here, if they don’t have it in stock they will gladly order it in for you. I hope to see my book on their shelf one day. I’m manifesting lol look it up.
For this edition of our new segment Savvy Bookstagrammer Saturday. Today we will get to know Nikki from @lived_athousandlives. I stumbled across Nikki’s account almost by accident and been a avid follower ever since. Let’s get to it.
The gorgeous Nikki x
1). I follow you on Instagram and love seeing your content but say I had never seen your feed/reels and I asked you to describe it, what would you tell me?
N). Thank you for following and I appreciate your support of my content! I create digital eyeshadow palettes by selecting the colors from a book cover. I use a nine pan template. Where the original colors meet gets blended to create new shades. Then I choose 3-4 of the shades to lay a shimmer effect on. Sometimes, I’ll put a design on the shades or even the palette itself. I’ll also sometimes create extra products such as single shadows.
Book Cover palettes
2). FYI, I am in love with the palettes, how did the idea come about?
N). I got the idea from watching different TikTok users do it for random pop culture characters. They were mostly doing it for nostalgic cartoons. Disney princesses, Sailor Moon, Powder Puff Girls, etc. I loved watching them. I collect eyeshadow palettes and love watching people create art. Had the idea to make it bookish and went with it. It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve gained an amazing community and so many close friends from it.
A few more because they are gorgeous and I love them x
3). How long have you been on Instagram, or should I say Bookstagram?
N). I started Bookstagram at the end of May of last year.
4).Your profile says you Alpha/beta/ARC read for authors; can you explain the difference between those types of readers?
N). An Alpha reader is getting to read the book as it’s being written. So chapter by chapter. I’ve been in a Google document watching an author write in real time and giving opinions in the moment.
A Beta reader is getting to read the book after it’s been written but is still in the edit/developmental stage. Authors are typically looking for opinions on flow and if any changes need to be made. This is also the stage where if needed, sensitivity readers can be asked to make sure the book is written respectfully and with care.
An ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) reader gets the completed work. Mostly outside of the edit stage but before it gets published. This is similar to a soft launch or a control group. Authors hoping to get a larger consensus of how people will react, catch any last minute errors, and hopefully get the word out that people love the book before it’s released.
5).What’s your favorite part of being an Alpha/Beta/ ARC for authors?
N). I love being part of the creative process. I have learned so much about what goes into writing, editing, and publishing a book. If readers knew half of what goes into it, they would be amazed. I had no clue prior to this. I am in awe of how difficult and time consuming it is. Then seeing it published and in the hands of readers…terrifying and amazing. Kudos to anyone willing to put themselves out there like that!
6). Tell us what your top 3 favorite genres to read?
N). Oh man. That’s tough. I read quite a bit, so it’s hard to choose. But if I have to pick…I’m going to go with Paranormal/fantasy, Mafia, and Hockey…all of which being romance.
7). What is your favorite trope?
N). Another hard one! There are so many I love haha. Going to go with “I’ll burn the world down for her.”
8). Do you create content full-time? If no, is that something you are working towards, and if yes, do you have advice for people that wish to do the same?
N). Sadly, I do not. I wish! I would love to eventually. I’d say the most important thing is to build a community for yourself. Grow your circle with people who will love and support you.
9).Do you set reading goals each year? If yes, what is your goal for this year?
N). I have set a goal but have sadly fallen behind on it. Last year my goal was 300 and I read 331, I think. The year before that I read 368. This year my goal is 365 but life has been busier than ever and I don’t believe I’ll meet that. Which is ok! I just love to read and meeting my goal would be awesome but it’s not a big deal if I don’t.
10). If you could describe your dream reading corner, what would it look like and what couldn’t you live without besides books of course lol
N). I would love to have a bay window but instead of a bench, have a big comfy bed built in. With beautiful dark wood shelves lining the walls. Plush couches and a recliner to change up the seating options. Oh and don’t forget about the fireplace!
11). Is there a genre you absolutely wouldn’t read?
N). I stay away from overtly religious themes. However, I do make some exceptions…such as Priest by Sierra Simone. 😏
12).When you’re not creating content, what else do you like to do?
N). I love to have game/tv nights with my friends. Catan and The Mandalorian being the current ones.
13).Tell me three things about you that I’ll find interesting?
N). I am working towards being in a place where I can start my Master’s in Library and Information Sciences. I have held a young snow leopard while at a wildlife sanctuary. I have a couple book ideas and would like to get them going.
Cuteness overload….
14).Beverage of choice when reading? Do you snack when you read? favorite snack?
N). Sweet tea! I very rarely snack while reading. If I do though, it’s usually salted sunflower seeds.
15).How would an author go about getting their book featured in your feed?
N). They can leave me a request as a comment or send me a dm.
Thank you so much Nikki for joining us today and anyone that would like to pop over to either TikTok or Instagram and give Nikki a follow here are her handles. @lived_athousandlives.
Love, bookish Magnolia xx
Psssstttttt …….. Nikki will be doing a palette of my book cover and I can’t wait to share it.
On this edition of Fan Fiction Friday I get to introduce the delightful June Harding. I’ve also had the pleasure of arc-reading all three books in her debut trilogy and hopelessly fell in love with all the characters, the story, and the gritty, messy love story of it all so my first question is:
The delightful June Harding
1). Describe your trilogy in 5 words or less for anyone thinking of delving into your books for the first time?
J). Sexy, dark, fantasy, romance, uncomfortable
Book 1 Thicker Than Gold
2). Being your debut novel’s what would you say you are most proud of having completed the trilogy and it’s out in the world?
J). I definitely didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I started writing a trilogy. Knowing now the copious amounts of work it takes to publish a single book, I’m not sure I could ever do it again. Ignorance was a key factor for these books! But I’m so glad I was able to finish it all, and I’m definitely proud of myself for pushing through.
3). Is there anything about the whole process of self-publishing you really disliked? Did anything surprise you about the process?
J). I never intended to self publish these books actually. I was only going to submit them to publishers and if they didn’t get picked up, of well. But then by the end I’d really fallen in love with the world and the characters, and I wanted to share them with people. The whole self publishing journey has been a steep learning curve. I couldn’t find a single comprehensive video or instruction list of what to do when. When do you need the covers by? When do you put your book up for pre-order? How do you get your book onto sites like Goodreads? I cried so many times trying to publish these books, but I got there, and I’m glad I did.
4). How long have you been writing?
J). I started writing when I was a kid. I loved making up stories. All that took a backseat when I grew up, and I only recently got back into it.
Book 2 Brighter than Gold
5). What inspired you to get into writing?
J). BookTok! I was reading all the top book recommendations, and thought, “I can do this.” I wanted to write the kind of books that I wanted to read, and there was no kink-fantasy out there at the time.
6). What gave you the idea for the topic?
J). The Gold series initially started off as an entirely different book. I think there were about 4-5 POVs, and written very Game Of Thrones like, very high-fantasy. By the time I got to the middle of book two, I knew whose story I wanted to tell, and that was Reyah’s. She was the easiest to write, and I just knew where her head was at. So everyone else got stripped down, and I re-wrote the entire thing from her standpoint. I think it helps to enrich the world as well, there is a whole story of how the four Kings came to unite, there is so much more to the relationship between Yates and Burke, and I think that lends to enrich the Gold Series.
7). Did you have to research any aspects of the book?
J).Mostly army stuff, rankings, uniforms, and armor.
8). What does the writing process look like for you?
J). My writing process changes from book to book. I didn’t plot a damn thing for the Gold Series, I just wrote what made me happy. But I did find it difficult to wrap things up the way I wanted at the end. “Know your ending” is such sage advice. All I knew was that I wanted to see Reyah with the crown on her head at the end
Book 3 Stronger Than Gold
9). The dynamics of the main characters are so unique in their complexity. Love is so fluid for the FMC, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but was that intentional with her?
J). Very intentional. I wanted her to have her great love story, but it was never going to be with Kaspian. The lack of emotion and love that she gave him was all very intentional. This is why I used “uncomfortable” as one of the words to describe the book, I wanted the ready to be on the fence about things, and not know who to root for.
10).It was such a refreshing and interesting approach to have all these different representations of relationships from traditional to purely sexual to same-sex, polyamory, and beautifully written as well. Is having these different viewpoints, and representations important to you?
J). Yes! All these different lifestyles are massively important to me. I don’t believe in rigid sexualities. I live a life style where people around me are free and fluid without an ounce of judgment, and it’s incredible. Reyah’s journey also helped me explore my own feelings about polyamory, and how loving two people at once isn’t always easy, but it can be truly beautiful.
11).Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to take that leap and write their first novel?
J). Just write. Write and write and write. Something will strike you and then you’ll get swept up in it. But also READ! A Lot. When I’m writing fantasy, I’m ready fantasy. If I’m writing a romcom, I’m reading a romcom. It helps keep me in that headspace and can spawn new ideas for your own story.
12). We want the inside scoop, so what’s next for you?
J). Well the cat is out of the bag now, but my queer romcom, Two Best Men will be available next month! I started it as an exercise to see if I could wrap my brain around writing modern fiction after having written 3 fantasy novels, and ended up falling in love with my two main characters.
Thank you so much for joining us today June and I’m happy to report I get to ARC read her new book Two Best Men before its release so keep an eye out for a future review post. You can find All three books in the Gold Trilogy on Amazon. You can also stalk, follow, and like June on TikTok and Instagram @junehardingauthor.
Bahahahahahahahaha, bet you thought this was going to be a totally different post when you saw that picture. Tricked you. This edition of Thirsty Thursday is all about winter skincare. Winter is a bitch in Canada so unless I want to look like a chapped reptile I have to keep my Skincare game strong. So Ladies and Gents, because yes, gentleman, you can use nice skincare too, here’s what has me looking as close to flawless as I can get.
For those of you that are new here, Hi, I’m Sarah and I have lupus and inflammatory arthritis. Part of that joy includes a skin condition they call the “butterfly” rash. I always look like I’m blushing which, to be honest, is helpful when I’m reading smut in public. I can just say it’s my face lol but on other days it’s annoying. When I’m having a flare-up it will get blotchy like rosacea so along with the medicated cream I get from a dermatologist, I need to have a really good skincare routine. Before my diagnosis, I was the slather-on drugstore body cream everywhere, and call-it-good kind of girl. I’ve realized that spending or investing money on good quality products is more beneficial to me and my skin.
Washing my face and removing makeup I have three go-to products. I’ll also include scrub and mask, as I use those from time to time as well.
Monat Be Gentle creamy Cleanser
this is for Dry, Sensitive skin, perfect for when my face is flared up and hurts.
Caudalie Gently Buffing Cream
For sensitive skin as well, but has jojoba microbeads and grape seed oil so I use this a lot for a light scrub.
Scrubs and Masks I use
-Monat Berry Refined Scrub
-Monat Be Purified Charcoal Mask
Makeup Removal
-Monat Vanishing Balm (magic in a jar) just saying. This picture made me a liar I had to use a Stock image because I broke the pink lid on mine.
Aftercare
-Monat Hydration booster
-Monat Night Haven Age Control cream
Caudalie Grape Water Spray
Organic grape water which gives me just an extra boost of hydration soothes and strengthens my skin. I have used this in place of setting spray after applying makeup or periodically throughout the day if I’m feeling dry.
You may have noticed I do use a lot of Monat products and Caudalie is my next must have. I also didn’t use stock photos, but rather actual photos of the products so you can see I actually use them and am not making a sales pitch. I choose these products because they are all-natural and have proven time and time again to help me keep my skin in the best possible condition its been ever. I will say these products are mid-range priced to high-end but very small amounts are needed so they last me about 6-8 months before I have to replenish with the exception of the grape water spray because I use that more frequently. Monat has several different skin systems to suit anyone’s needs and so does Caudalie. Caudalie is sold online and in Sephora stores while Monat is sold through any rep in your area including myself. It just made sense to sign-up and save myself money lol.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out and I’ll answer any and all questions to the best of my ability. With anything I give my opinion on, it is my opinion, and I’m just sharing what works for me.
On the next Thirsty Thursday I’ll share my go to products for the neck down and my slight obsession with Frank Body products. Until then stay fresh, thirsty and feeling fabulous.
Today is Wellness Wednesday! Usually, I have D.I.Y Wednesday but in keeping up with life stuff and being more authentic and open about who I am and what life looks like for me I’m going to be changing up a few things and alternating things each week to keep it fresh, bring more content and grow this blog baby of mine up.
I’ll start by saying lupus sucks. It does, I’m not even going to pretend it doesn’t. Add in inflammatory arthritis and I’m a walking, talking bundle of positivity and light. Okay, I’m not totally miserable but it has been an immense struggle for me to balance life as it looks now, give myself credit when I make it through the hard days, and not push myself too hard on the good days. I do try to stay as positive as I can but I will be honest when I say, people who suffer from illnesses that you can’t see, pain you don’t understand, and mental health struggles day in and day out hate being told “just be positive” or “being positive fixes everything”.
This one was tough to admit but I feel all these things and more.
We hate it, don’t do it.
Having a positive mindset does help manage the tough days and enjoy the good days, however, it doesn’t fix the problem. Like medication, exercise, healthy eating and so on which are part of my daily life helps with symptoms, none of those things can cure it. So things that do make me happy like this blog have fallen way behind.
In my time away I did do a few things which you will read about as I get back into the flow of writing again but I’ll give you a quick overview.
I wrote a book and I published this year. my first blog post back was shameless self-promotion lol
I attended my very first author retreat in San Diego in Sept 2022 ( this will have to be a 3-part post lots to share)
I did the longest and hardest hike to date in the snow at Lake Louise
I finally finished my office reno (only took 3 years)
Still working on my ensuite renovations (bathrooms take forever)
I took a creative photography class
have a reading goal of 300 books to read this year
Starting a new treatment for Lupus (scared shitless)
Doing all the things xx
And a partridge in a pear tree.
Don’t want to spill everything, you’ll read about it soon enough. This week’s lineup is fantastic. I’m not sure what tomorrow will be I’m flying by the seat of my pants here but on Fan Fiction Friday I have the delightful June Harding here for a chat about her debut novels. Yes, that’s plural. And Saturday we are mixing it up with Savvy Bookstagram Saturday, our new segment meeting some fantastic people who live love, and breathe all things book related. We will have influencers on the blog, and businesses will still show up on Saturday too you know I love to promote those, and more trips, DIYs, and rants from me will be here too. So buckle up, welcome back, and thank you for the unrelenting support, well wishes on bad days, encouragement on good days, and everything in between.
Welcome back to another edition of Fan Fiction Friday. Today’s edition is a shameless plug for my debut novel, lol. why? well, because I finally did it, I have things to say, and I’m extremely proud of it. I was recently interviewed for a local newspaper, so I will borrow the questions she asked me and add a few of my own I think readers would like to know about. Let’s get into it. I should probably do a quick recap and introduce myself again before we get started. My name is Sarahjane. I am the owner of Rustic Magnolia, mom to 3, and grandma to one. I wear several different hats depending on what I’m doing, and as of January 26th, 2023, I can now add published author to my list as well.
Hey, it’s me ……
1. How long have you been writing for?
A: I’ve always enjoyed writing creatively. I wrote poetry in my teens and wrote a few articles for newspapers and magazines when my children were young. I’d always wanted to or I guessed dreamed of writing a book that when I got sick and Covid hit I had all this free time so I figured why not.
2. What inspired you to get into writing?
A: When I was younger writing was cathartic and a escape. A way to put word to feelings I didn’t want to say out loud. As I got older I found inspiration in everything. Every day I’m inspired by something or someone or a feeling I had. Writing is so freeing
3. Is this your first book?
A: Yes, it is and hopefully not the last.
It’s soooooo pretty
4. What gave you the idea for the topic?
A: The Bratva and all organized crimes have always intrigued me. I love history, myths, and legends. I also happen to love romance books and MMA fighting. Then i got greedy in a sense because I thought, why not incorporate all three. Once the initial idea came to me, it kind of nagged at me until I had it mapped out beginning to end.
5. How did you research some aspects of the book?
A: I bought several books on mafia and organized crime. I scoured the internet for all related topics about the bratva, how they worked, the hierarchy, weapons, and all illegal activities related to them. I watched countless hours of UFC and MMA fighting bouts to make all the fighting scenes in the book seem as authentic as possible.
Book blurb….. so you know what the book is about.
6. What was the most surprising thing about the writing and publishing process?
A: I learned that writing is the easy part lol. Everything that comes after you’ve written your book I found overwhelming. Proper formatting, trigger warnings and why you should use them, where to publish as I self-published. How to set it up, what programs to invest in, and learn a whole new set of skills to market it after the fact. When you self-publish, everything is your job to make sure your book is the best it can be and then to market your book so it does well.
7.What was the most surprising thing about the writing and publishing process?
A: I learned that writing is the easy part lol. Everything that comes after you’ve written your book I found overwhelming. Proper formatting, trigger warnings and why you should use them, where to publish as I self-published. How to set it up, what programs to invest in, and learn a whole new set of skills to market it after the fact. When you self-publish, everything is your job to make sure your book is the best it can be and then to market your book so it does well.
8.Is the book a stand alone or part of a planned series?
A: The Fall of Baba Yaga is Book 1 of 2 with a spin off series in the works for a few characters.
9. Who was your favorite lesser characters and why?
A: That’s a tough one tbh I tried to give a small back story to each of my lesser characters so a few of them when I wrote their parts inspired new stories. I don’t want to give anything away so you’ll have to read the book and see which characters I left nuggets with hinting at possible future stories. But to answer the question I don’t have a favorite as every character was personal and I either loved them or hated them in the best way possible of course.
10. What advice would you give to others starting this process?
A: I will share some of the same advice I received that has helped me. 1. Never cheap out on your book cover or a good editor. Especially editing. 2. Just get the words written down. Don’t self-edit as you go. It’s a waste of time and the first draft always sucks. It’s meant to. 3. Ignore all the voices telling you that you can’t. You can. Imposter syndrome is a real thing but don’t let it stop you. 4. Break everything down to the smallest tasks so it’s more attainable. Set small mini-goals along the way and celebrate the wins no matter how small. Accept the bumps in the road and be patient. It’s worth it in the end.
11. Were there any doubts along the way? And how did you work through them?
A: Definitely, imposter syndrome was really tough, self-doubt in my work. I figured out that the need to do it and commit to it that it outweighed the reason I was making up not to do it.
12. What is your least favorite part of the process?
A: I’d say marketing the book. I had to learn so many things about making reels, posts, hashtags to use, trending music, time of day to post, and so on. I’m sure it won’t always feel like this as I get better at doing it.
Peek at the beautiful inside…. The photo was taken by Taylor Hillier Photography and looks perfect at the heading of each chapter.
13. What is next for you?
A: I’m currently writing Book 2 in the duet and have several other story ideas lined up after.
This is the part where I usually thank the guest for coming and sharing today but that’s me and I think that might be a little pretentious thanking myself so instead I’ll say thank you to my readers, my editor, friends and family for the support I got reaching for this dream and seeing it through. This book is a dark romance, so please check the trigger warnings before purchasing as it might not be the book for you.
Happy Fri-yay my fellow book lovers. It’s a special Friday edition for me anyway. I have the absolute pleasure of interviewing best selling, award winning author Tish Thawer. When I reached out to Tish about this interview I didn’t expect a yes but I wanted to try anyway. When I got the yes and the answers showed up in my inbox, I may have had a total fangirl moment, ok I totally did. I received signed copies for Christmas of easily one of my favorite series The Witches of Blackbrook. Must read, but I’m rambling now so let’s get this party started.
Author Tish Thawer
1.) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
T.) In early 2011, I woke up from a dream and had the title and plot of my first book solidly planted in my mind, along with books two and three.
2.) How long does it take you to write a book on average?
T.) Anywhere from one month to almost a year. It honestly just depends on the story.
3.) What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
T.) I usually wake up between five and six in the morning, have a few cups of coffee with the hubby, and then get to work by eight. Normally, depending on other factors, I work eight hours a day, five days a week. But if I’m on a deadline, my hours can extend and include the weekends.
4.) What can’t you live without when immersed in writing?
T.) Honestly, when I’m completely focused, the only thing I usually have around me is a drink of some sort. Water, coffee, tea, or if I’m being bad… a soda. LOL.
5.) Where do you find inspiration for your books?
T.) Everywhere! Some days I wake up with new ideas in my head, or simply see something in a room, or out my window while driving to town, that will spark a new idea. And you know what they say… magic is all around us.
The Witches of Blackbrook series ❤
6.) What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
T.) Reading, watching movies with my family, games, fishing and hiking on our property, and doing house renovations or landscaping projects. We’re always busy around here! LOL
7.) When you first started writing was there anything that really surprised you about yourself or the process?
T.) At first, I was surprised by how much you need to know/learn to be successful in this business. It’s never just… write a story and you’re done. There’s so much more to it.
8.) What do you think makes a good story?
T.) Gripping plot. Unexpected twists and turns. Engaging and relatable characters.
9.) Did you ever have a moment or time where you felt the dreaded imposter syndrome? And do you have any advice for writers struggling with that now?
T.) Of course! I think we all deal with that in one form or another. And my advice to get through it… Stay true to yourself. Be who you are and know that will get you through as you learn, grow, and hone your skills while finding your true readership.
10.) What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
T.) I do a TON of research on so many things. People, places, buildings, the history a specific era, and so much more. During the drafting phase I can spend months gathering all the details I need to start a new story off on the right foot.
11. Are you planner or a fly by the seat of your pants when ideas and stories are begging to be told?
T.) A little of both, but mostly a pantster. I do attempt to plot a very rough outline, but most the time, the story just unfolds on its own.
12. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with the bad ones and do you celebrate the good ones?
T.) Sometimes, but not as a regular thing. And for the bad ones… I always try to take any of criticism that’s offered and apply it to my next book so I can continue to learn and grow. And the good ones… I’ll randomly share them alongside promo images or feature them in my ads.
13. What was the hardest scene to write? and why?
T.) Man… this is a tough one. I honestly don’t think I can pinpoint a particular scene. Though, I will say, I do tend to struggle writing love scenes for some reason. I think it’s the whole… “he placed a hand here, he kissed her there…” monotony that I fight against.
14. What is the most difficult part of the artistic process?
T.) For me, pushing past writer’s block. Some stories will flow and rush out onto the page while others are like pulling teeth. When that happens, I have to force myself keep going, or I’ll never get done.

15. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring authors?
T.) Do your research, and find a great team. And that’s the same advice I’d give to aspiring authors as well. You have to know what you’re doing and the ‘rules’ to be successful in the industry, and having a great team to help you along the way is imperative.
16. What can readers expect this year?
T.) So far, I have three releases planned this year, with the possibility of a fourth. WEAVER is up first on June 21st, with a surprise release happening during that same time. Then, I have a box-set release planned for August or September. And after that, (if all goes smoothly) I’ll have another new book releasing in October or November.
17. What has been a highlight of your career so far?
T.) Probably when The Witches of BlackBrook hit the top 100 in the paid Kindle store and was ranked #1 in Historical Fiction above Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (who I LOVE)!!! That was a great day!
18. Do you do meet and greets with your readers? and if yes, where can they expect to see you next?
T.) I do. My next event is Authors in the Bluegrass, happening in Lexington Kentucky the first weekend of October this year.
19. Do you find you have to go back and review characters when writing series?
T.) Absolutely! I keep notes in my documents and refer to them frequently.
20. Have you ever had an idea for a totally different book while working on your current one? do you store it away for later or do you have notebooks on standby to jot it down while its fresh?
T.) Hahaha… All. The. Time! And yes, when inspiration strikes, I start a new notebook and get the concept down and out of my head for the time being, until I can finish what I’m currently working on.
21. Are your family and friends all supportive or did you have to overcome that own wall in your head and say I can do this?
T.) I have the most supportive family and friends ever! They are my sounding boards, my plot helpers, my cheerleaders, and sometimes even my event assistants. I couldn’t ask for a better support system and am grateful for them all!
22. In closing is there anything you’d like to add?
T.) Just THANK YOU SO MUCH! Reader support is key to every author’s success. Whether it’s just a few lines for a review, a star rating, or a blog interview like this… we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Happy Thursday you beautiful people I hope your day is going great and you woke up feeling ready to conquer your day. Today I have the pleasure to interview our Miss Mission Canada Brittany Elizabeth Alice and learn a few things about the beauty world I never knew. Let’s dive in.
1.) It’s great to be here today and have this candid conversation with you, so lets start by telling us a little about yourself?
B.) Thank you for having me as your guest! My name is Brittany and I am a female entrepreneur and Miss Mission Canada 2022. I love anything sparkly and seeing people around me genuinely happy. I spend most of my time meeting with amazing humans, working away on my laptop or behind the camera at a photoshoot or maybe my Instagram stories. I am wildly passionate, very easy-going and usually not dressed appropriately for the weather. If you happen to see me out I love hugs and would be so excited to meet you.
Miss Brittany
2.) How long have you been competing in pageants and what got you started?
B.) I competed in my first pageant at 7 or 8 years old and it was a very impressionable experience. My mom had me dabbling in some very 90’s style modeling and at the time the main modeling agency in Calgary (Patti Falconer Agency) was heavily involved in the Calgary pageants and so it organically happened. I am very thankful my mom put in a lot of time and energy (and I am sure some money) to ensure I had these opportunities for growth and of course to enjoy the fun of it all. Pageants are such crazy but fun days even as a young girl so I got back into competing as an adult in 2019/2020!
3.) What is your platform and why is it so important to you?
B.) The Female CEO initiative was created to drive my goal to the next level, to reach, showcase, and support thousands of female business owners across my beautiful country. I use my knowledge of people’s interactions with social media and my understanding of engagement to drive my message and inspire many to shine. With each story of determination and success we will see more and more women come forward as leaders in their community. Professional working women believe that access to and networking with female leaders will help them advance in their career. Imagine how much you are amplifying the success of women GLOBALLY just by pursuing your own goals and stepping into that power for us all. My passion for people’s success, as well as for traveling, fuel my entrepreneurial goal to grow a stronger, more unified female presence in the business world. I am passionate about MY MISSION for the future of our women and ultimately the NEED for them to be in leadership roles all over the WORLD. Female CEO is so important to me because I want more for the women in this world and if I can create this platform that makes things just a little easier and inspire young women to pursue their dreams then I know it gives me hope that I will also succeed long-term. If we see the success of others it illuminates a path for us and shows that there is someone out there who understands our need to succeed and create our own personal freedom.
Female Ceo
4.) Your are also the founder of Female CEO, can you tell us a little about that?
B.) Women deserve to be the executive decision maker in huge world issues, their businesses and their personal lives no matter where we live. We deserve, despite being marginalized so deeply in our history and in some places still today, the luxury of climbing our way to the top. We are strong, resilient and ready to see the next 20 years show ground breaking progression for women in business just as we’ve seen such huge milestones in our past. The basis of the platform and the work I do with it is to not only give young girls from any background the visual of real women achieving their goals and being role models but to also provide affordable services to female entrepreneurs. From influencer and modeling services to complete website design and building to marketing and brand development plans I try to offer support and services to females that I truly wish I had when starting my journey. With many opportunities to network and market their brands I also do my best to offer a community feeling to these women who may be feeling alone and challenged daily to do more than seems possible alone. Female CEO is a place where women are not alone in anyway and I want them to feel that when they come to me or my page and hopefully take the time to learn more about my mission.
5.) What do you think is the biggest problem facing young people today?
B.) The access to endless ANYTHING online. This creates so many unnecessary comparisons and pressures at such an impressionable age. We forget that too much of anything can sometimes be worse than nothing at all. I feel this is such a large issue because there is no way to contain the problem and as technology continues to progress it will only become worse. I truly hope that we can continue to educate young people on positive lifestyle choices and staying authentic to themselves despite what you have access to online to help combat the damage access to the internet could do.
6.) How do you define success?
B.) Success to me is spending your days doing what makes you feel fulfilled. That can look different to everyone and it’s important to note that when watching others online. Success is not one simple destination. Success can be little things each day or a large milestone achievement that bring joy to your life.
“Success is not one simple destination”
7.) What are the most common misconceptions people have about beauty pageants?
B.) Oh my goodness, so many but I will name a few that I find so wild! People think it is just your walk on stage and a few small questions that lead us to a sparkly crown that changes our lives overnight or that all pageant girls care about is expensive gowns and looking perfect. These are all the smallest parts of most pageants. We prepare for months to speak well and present ourselves as professionals with potential to change HUGE world issues in short amounts of time. Oftentimes people do not realize pageants can include large portions of the scoring system going to how much money you fundraise for a cause or how well you speak in front of a camera or on stage with thousands of people watching you. We oftentimes get told by others it is not a space for young women and that we shouldn’t be allowing these professionals to judge us yet we are literally being judged by people outside the pageant industry in a negative and assuming way. We ASK for these judges to help us improve and we welcome these voices into our lives unlike the uneducated opinions of people who more than likely do not have any experience in the pageant industry or us pageant sisters know they more than likely wouldn’t feel that way! Pageant haters are super funny to me because there are so many random shows and male dominated industries that people support but pageantry really upsets those who don’t know much about it. Just like anything we have progress to do but also finding opportunities that empower women is rare and a huge win for me so I hope others will be more open-minded to pageants.
8.) What do you think sets you apart from other contestants?
B.) My strong clear mission as well as my mindset. I love the crown and of course I want to WIN but at the end of the day I also LOVE the process and I see every benefit competing can have regardless of a title or not. If I wasn’t in a pageant I would still be living the same lifestyle and pursuing my passions so I think as a competitor it feels less stressful, rehearsed and people can tell that when they speak to you. I really LOVE pageant week and I try to make the absolute most of these rare opportunities to be surrounded by 30 or more other AMAZING and powerful women and I do find that some competitors miss out on enjoying this. Part of my mindset is that realistically the odds can be like 98% chance you do NOT get a crown so why rely ALL your success and happiness on that 2%?! There are so many little things in that 98% that people consider failure just because you didn’t get a crown and that makes me so sad. As a competitor this can help set you apart so much because how you handle the loss is just as important if not more important than how you handle the win. Enjoying the process of personal growth, networking with women around my country and soon the world is so much more valuable than a crown to me. The crown is a beautiful and once in a lifetime opportunity type of bonus for me.
9.)You’re set to compete in the Dominican this September for Miss Mission International representing Canada and I have to know what are you most excited for? Do you get nervous?
Our Miss Mission Canada 2022
B.) I am insanely excited to meet all the girls and enjoy a week of pageant life. As mentioned I LOVE PAGEANT WEEK. I love getting to meet all the girls and seeing it all come together on stage. Pageant week is like this huge whirlwind sleepover with all the prettiest and most successful girls you know but you have crazy busy days and barely sleep. I actually usually only get nervous as they are literally about to call who makes it into the finals because that is the moment that decides if you need to push yourself further or can enjoy others’ success. I am confident that whatever happens is meant to happen and I have put all the work I can in, stayed authentic to myself. I think I get more nervous in preparation, I try to do as much as I can in all aspects so that I do not feel as nervous traveling to the show. By the time I leave I hope the work is done and I am just ready to enjoy a week with my pageant sisters and pretty outfits.
10.) In your opinion, what is the most important part of a beauty pageant?
B.) To me the most important part of a beauty pageant is what it teaches you and the lasting relationships you can make. I cannot stress to people enough how supportive and inspiring the women you meet in the pageant world are. I LOVE being on stage, do not even think for one second that part isn’t so cool to me but that is a few quick moments of my life but the following YEARS of valuable connections with even 1 amazing person makes the experience so worth it.
11.)How has failure helped you in your achievements?
B.) Failure creates grit and when you are building confidence it is important to know that you can pick yourself up, start again or continue moving forward even if things get tough. Oftentimes failure in one area can lead us to success in another. I have personally “lost” most pageants I entered and have had business ideas see zero profit but it truly has made me more resilient to the ever evolving world. I love the old saying that “from darkness comes light” because some of my darkest moments have gifted me things I never knew I needed in my life.
12.) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
B.) On a beach with my laptop for sure. I love the idea that my life can come with me wherever I am and I want to be doing what I love but somewhere warm!
13.) Do you have to possess a lot of self confidence to compete in beauty pageants? Do you have any advice for anyone struggling with that?
B.) I think competing in pageants can build your confidence SO much so even if you are a little hesitant or feeling like you are not confident ENOUGH then it is an even bigger sign that you should do it! Pageants create clear goals and a safe space for women which gives confidence and in my opinion we need more of that to be able to make mistakes and learn from them or feel like what we have to say IS important. Speaking on confidence specifically, it doesn’t have to just be pageants that do this for you – share your passions with your friends and family regardless of titles or any judgment. The first step to confidence is doing or saying what you feel is right for you and your goals regardless of any fear. Practicing physical fitness and being educated on my own body gave me more confidence as a Personal Trainer but also in everyday life. Helping others feel confident in their businesses helps me feel confident I am a good leader in my industry. There are so many little ways to build our own self-confidence and pageantry is just a very fun and impactful way I have been lucky enough to experience. I highly recommend pageants for any age but overall my advice is to find a space to speak your truth without fear and be confident in who you are!
14.) What do you think the world needs more of and what could it use less of?
B.) Simply put we need more kindness and less people with toxic power. There are many situations that could be solved with kindness and avoided if people weren’t given the power to control and manipulate for selfish reasons.
15.) I love that you are so driven to support women empowerment, How important do you think it is for women to set goals, practice self-care and gratitude?
B.) Women NEED to take the time for this. Traditionally, we are taught as women to GIVE until we literally cannot physically give anything more, to achieve more and more with it never being considered ENOUGH and I do not think that is healthy. Take the time to really learn what your body and mind need so you can set goals for YOURSELF. Not just for work and family responsibilities but for true happiness and long term health. Women deserve to empower themselves without guilt or shame.
Ready to take on the world and help women along the way x
16.) Wrapping up is there anything you’d like to add? please make sure to give all your socials so we can follow your journey to the world stage and all things Female Ceo?
B.) I just want to say THANK YOU for all your support and kindness in my journey and now giving me the opportunity to share my platform and my story is really amazing. For anyone reading this I want you to step into your power and know that your goals are important and every small step is something to celebrate.
Thank you so much Brittany for joining us today and giving us a look into the beauty pageant world. I’m so inspired by your drive to help women in business and chase your dreams. I wish you the absolute best of luck in September and we will have to get you back on with all the details after. Be sure to follow Brittany if you’d like to see how her journey is going, support her in upcoming pageants or to feel inspired yourself.
Welcome back to another edition of Savvy Business Saturday. Today I get to interview an extremely talented and amazing human being, Geoff Bourrie, the owner and artist behind Jurassic Ink Tattoo Shop located in Drumheller, Ab. Can’t wait for you to meet him so let’s get started.
1.) Tell us a little about yourself, the why and when you became a tattoo artist?
G.) I have always had a keen eye for art and found myself exploring many different styles of artistry from a very young age. Pencil, pen ,crayons, paint and even clay. As I became older, I was drawn to imagery that was permanent on skin. I began creating my own designs and started designing tattoos for friends and family. After putting a good solid portfolio of artwork together, I was fortunate enough to be given an apprenticeship in 2001.
